Apple = Ecosystem Goals

In my previous article (check it out here) I delved into my thoughts on ecosystems created by tech companies.

This article is specifically delving into the outcome of Apple’s announcement of their chipsets for Macs. Apple announced that their Macs are going to be powered by their custom made chips based on similar architecture as their iPad and iPhone chips.

From the surface view, it made me wonder: If the new chips are going to be to those of the iPads and iPhones as they run on the iPad would it mean that macOS apps would be backward compatible to the iPad? Would there be this ultimate synergy that would knock out all competition?

I would love to see a future where apps run seamlessly between my iPad and my Mac. It would make the switch natural. Maybe a lite version of the macOS app turns on as soon as you switch to your iPad. I think the approach of 2 in 1 PCs has been fundamentally flawed. Manufacturers have been trying to gain the same amount of processing power from a monitor in-hand as a fully functioning laptop. I feel a better approach would be to separate the two devices and keep them separate and let them serve their purpose based on their capabilities at least till the technology allows us to make thin and light tablets capable of actual 100% laptop-grade work.

People on-the-go do not tend to do heavy intensive work anyway. It’s usually the light work, touch-ups so to say that happens on the fly. Also for the sake of mental peace, I think, intentionally, portable devices could be slightly restricted than more powerful desktops and laptops to allow people to have a more freeing life.

Do we as designers even question if we should be working everywhere we go at the same pace and potential? Should we, instead, try to make the user understand that it’s okay to take a break and just lighten our minds from the burden, and enjoy life outside of work? Outside of getting deadlines met? Just a thought.

Anyway, these were my thoughts. I was just curious — and have to admit — hella excited to see the direction that Apple is headed towards. I’d love to see how this strategy affects other manufacturers as well.
